Abstract

Treatment of tibial plafond fractures remains a challenging problem in orthopaedics and has evolved over the last 30 years. The objective was to determine the characteristics and trends of the 50 most cited articles regarding tibial plafond fractures. A search of the ISI Web of Science database was performed for articles related to tibial plafond fractures. The 50 most cited articles were then assessed for number of citations, journal, study design, study timeline, study focus, level of evidence, and publication decade. Citation density was used to compare characteristics. Search returned 51 articles with 53 – 324 total number of citations and 2 – 32 citation density published between 1983 - 2013. Articles were published in 12 different journals with most originating in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma (35%). The most common study design was retrospective case series (57%), retrospective studies were the most (88%), and therapeutic was the most common focus (57%). Level II evidence had the highest average citation density (13.6) though most articles were level IV evidence (61%) which had an average citation density of 4.79. There were no level I studies among the most 50 most cited articles. Most articles were published in the 1990s (41%) though the 2010s had significantly higher citation density (7.18). None of the analyzed characteristics showed any significant impact on citation density. Therapeutic retrospective case series describing soft tissue management and staged fixation continue to be the most cited articles in the care of tibial plafond fractures.
